Why I Love My New Host

:note: everyone doing their homework in class…

They tell me IN ADVANCE when there is planned downtime. :love:

Estimated end time: 12:00 GMT

Services/Equipment: All servers.
Type of work: Kernel upgrade
Purpose of work: Upgrade all kernels to the most recent release
Impact of work: Loss of connectivity for less than 5 minutes

During the overnight hours of August 17th, 2005, Site5 will be performing kernel upgrades on all servers. In order to boot into the new kernel, all servers must be rebooted. Please expect a minor service interruption of less than 5 minutes per machine.

…and they warn me about things that’ll take LESS THAN ONE MINUTE and won’t cause any downtime!

Estimated end time: 10:00 GMT

Services/Equipment: All servers.
Type of work: Software upgrade
Purpose of work: PHP upgrade to 4.4.0
Impact of work: Loss of connectivity for less than 1 minute

During the overnight hours on August 18th, 2005, Site5 will be performing PHP upgrades on all servers. All servers will be upgraded to PHP 4.4.0. No downtime is expected for this upgrade provided there are no unforeseen issues.

Even so, I have backed up my WP database just in case. I’ve learned you can’t ever be too careful when it comes to backups. I don’t forsee that they’ll screw me over (hell, they warn me about the non-downtime!) but you never know. So, if my site is down for about five minutes, that’ll be why.

Also, thank you all very much for your comments and support. :hug: I’ll share them with Daniel tonight if he hasn’t already seen them.

  • Man, sounds like you hit the jackpot with your new host, though you are prudent to keep your own version of backup, too. I don’t trust Blogger too far out of my sight, and I always back up my monthly archives.

    Tell Daniel we’re thinking of him and his family up here in Michigan, too.
