Surprise

I totally got the absolute shock of my life this morning.

I am an aunt.

My younger brother and his live-in girlfriend had a baby in JANUARY and kept it a secret for not only the entire pregnancy, but for A MONTH after the baby was born. My parents found out last night.

Here’s what my mom posted on Facebook today:

So sometimes your kids can drop a bombshell on ya….Carson came home yesterday….followed by girlfriend Nellie…carrying a baby. THEIR baby. They had a baby a month ago and told no one…..NO ONE!!! ……SURPRISE!!
Meet Riley Alexander born 1-5-10 7:41 am 5 # 13 oz 19 1/2 ”
Our precious first Grandson!!

I am still reeling from the shock. I’m obviously super happy for them and very excited about my nephew – it means that Baby will have a cousin close in age (4mos apart) to play with, but I’m pissed they didn’t tell anyone. And I feel a little bit like my thunder has been stolen, since now Baby isn’t the first grandbaby OR the first boy. (I’m sure I’ll get over this, but right now I am still in rug-pulled-out-from-under-me mode.)

So yes – very excited, confused, happy, upset, and so many other things this morning. Congratulations to Carson and Nellie and baby Riley!

I’m just kinda.. wow, wtf? I don’t get how someone doesn’t tell their parents they’re having a baby?! :ambivalent:

  • Jem says:

& I forgot to say – congrats on becoming an aunt!

  • Brianne says:

Congrats! I became an aunt the “Surprise!” way as well. (Much drama ensued, ugh.) It took a LOT of adjusting by everyone, but now things are going well for the whole family and I just can’t get enough of my niece. I hope your family can cope with the drama and that eventually there’s a happy ending for you guys as well!

  • BreAnna says:

Oh my! Wow that is a surprise.

And I understand in a way about the thunder. I would like to be the first to have a baby in my siblings, I’m the oldest (of 6!) and the only one in a committed relationship, but I have a feeling there will be some irresponsibility along the way for one or two of them.

  • Auntie Missy says:

Hey! I had a great thought!! You can raise “Baby” as a girl–that way you will at least have the first girl in the family…..LOL. ROTFLMAO….Now don’t get mad and break your water or bust an ovary–your mom thinks I’m funny. When life gives you lemons—save them for throwing at your brother!!

  • Vixx says:

Oh my. That’s … bizarre! Do they live away?! Was it planned or did she discover late into the pregnancy?! So many questions as to why they’d keep it so quiet!

I’m very happy for your brother and your new Aunthood – congrats (and I appreciate how you’re feeling about the rug-pulling but try not to let it get you down!)

    V xx

Yeah I’m so with Jem on this one. How do you not tell anyone? You’d think it would have come up since you’re preggers too. Like, “Oh hai btw we’re having a baby too” not “SURPRISEKTHXBAI”

LOL anyhoo hooray on being an auntie! Welcome to the auntie club!

Not bad, not bad at all ;)

Judging by my parents, I could understand why I would consider keeping it secret. I’m usually not exactly keen on that kind of attention, and my parents (at least my mother) tend to know EVERYTHING better in a really annoying way. But I’m just gonna assume your parents are not that bad :)
That said, I’m somewhat sure I don’t really want children at all… ;)

  • Tracy says:

Never heard of someone keeping it a secret, but whatever floats their boat.
Congrats :) I’ll be an aunt in either April and May again – yay :D

  • Melissa says:

Kind of strange that they’d keep it a secret, but congrats anyway to them and to you for becoming an aunt!

I can understand where you’re coming from about them stealing your thunder. I’d definitely feel the same way. Heck, even though I had the first grandbaby in my family, I recently found out that my cousin and his wife are expecting and it STILL makes me jealous!

  • Clem says:

    My first reaction: o__o

Having a baby seems like such a significant thing – it’s seriously bizarre that they would keep it a secret!

Anyway, congrats to them and the rest of your family… and of course you for becoming an aunt!

  • krissy says:

Wow! Congratulations on being an aunt! I understand you feeling like your thunder has been stolen, but it will be all the same excitement when your little one comes. :) Especially excitement because the cousins will be so close in age!! That’s definitely a great thing!

    Again, congrats!!

  • Caity says:

Well first of all congratulations to them and second of all… WHAT THE HECK? That just seems like a completely ridiculous thing to do and almost seems like they were trying to wait and steal your thunder. I would be so hurt.

  • Jenny says:

    awww so cuuuuute :D
