21 Weeks

Baby appointment today! We discussed the ultrasound results, in which we got re-reassured that Baby looks just perfect and has all required bits and pieces which all look great. I don’t have any blood issues either (I have Rh+ blood so I apparently won’t need the Rhogam shot) and I passed my glucose test with flying colors so all is well on that front.

I asked about the SPD that Vixx mentioned and she didn’t seem too interested in formally diagnosing me with anything, but she said that I could try one of the maternity support belts to see if that would help stabilize things and encouraged me to start using it sooner rather than later just to keep things “together.” She cautioned me that it will likely only get worse from here on out, which I figured. Dang.

Honestly, I can deal with the having to sit down to put on pants, socks, etc. – what freaks me out is stuff like, what if we had a house fire and I had to crawl under the smoke to escape but I CAN’T CRAWL and then I would collapse from smoke inhalation and die in a fire! OMG! I told Daniel he will have to drag me out of our burning apartment by my feet, like Latrine with the Sheriff of Rottingham in Robin Hood: Men In Tights. That is my Plan B.

ANYWAY.

We listened to Baby’s heartbeat and the midwife giggled and was like, “Hiccups! Did you hear that?” and I hadn’t really, so she let us listen some more and explained that the tiny noises we were hearing other than the heartbeat was Baby hiccuping! I can’t feel it yet, but that cracks me up.

We had a different midwife today than the first two visits, since they start you out with one person and have you rotate through the rest of the staff, so by the time you are due you know all the people that could potentially deliver your baby. I really liked the lady today – she seemed more lighthearted than the first lady and made a funny joke about my memory to Daniel. I liked that she giggled at the hiccups too, since she just seemed tickled by the whole process and didn’t act like it was a boring part of her day. Not that the other lady acted bored or anything but this one was just more jolly, which I appreciated.

I also asked how bad it ACTUALLY was to sleep on your back and she was like, “Do not worry. Seriously. By the time you really, really shouldn’t be on your back, you won’t be able to be anyway. It’s fine. Sleep however you are able to sleep and really, DON’T WORRY.” Haha. I mostly asked because I’ve taken to sleeping in a sort of reclining position on this huge pile of pillows. Laying flat on my back makes my back ache when I get up in the morning, and my hips/pelvis TOTALLY do not let me lay on my side anymore. Oh man. It’s like I can feel all of those bones misaligning if I try it. So it was reassuring to me that even though I’m sleeping “on my back” I’m not depriving baby of all its oxygen or whatever.

Still no names. We sat down and each made first-draft lists and agreed on some that don’t sound bad, but I don’t think we have any that are really in the running. It feels really jinxy to me to reveal the name beforehand so I might share our short list but I doubt we’ll officially name the baby before we meet him. It would feel much less jinxy and weird to say “This is Baby So-and-so!” after the fact rather than have a name and then see the baby and be like, “Oh no, he’s not an X, he’s a Y!” and have to tell everyone the new name. I’m also afraid of getting weird unsolicited comments about the name from people. We don’t have weird tastes, but you never know what people will say.

Yeah! Name Baby what ever you want because Baby is yours! Just remember the Wayne warning that I sent you! :) Love you and thanks for the wonderful updates!

I pretty much have to sleep the same way you do now, propped up with a bunch of pillows. The back thing just DOES NOT work anymore (I’m surprised I made it to 37 weeks doing that!) and if I sleep on any side, at least one part of my body goes numb!

My suggestion would be to come up with a nickname for the baby right now & then give him the name when you see him. That is what my parents did. I was Snuggles until I was born & then they named me. That way you are naming the baby & he will know it, but you don’t give him a permanent id until you have delivered him. But that is just my opinion.

I definitely support your desire to keep Baby’s name secret! I think that’s what I will do too, at least to the general public and most family. People can be so nosy and then judgmental! It’s not anyone else’s business except for yours and Daniel’s when it comes to your kid.

Glad to hear all is still well on the health front. :D I adore reading your “squees” whenever you find cute baby stuff online, hahaha! XD

Hiccups, that is waaay cute! That’s something you totally don’t even think about, ya know?

I read this entry during my lunch break @ school on my blackberry and laughed loudly when I got to the part about you being dragged out by your feet. :-P

Thankfully, no one asked me why I was laughing, because there is no way I could explain that to anyone…

Yeah, I had a support belt. Helped a bit, but wasn’t great. :/

Sam was Samuel for as long as I can remember. I always thought that he was a boy, and never liked referring to the baby as ‘it’ so he was Bump and then always Sam from when he flashed us at my 20 week scan!

I wouldn’t give a second’s thought to what other people think of the name. What you both think is most important! As long as it doesn’t rhyme with anything unfortunate, you should be fine. ;)

We never really told anyone Ivys name before she was born but I dropped little cryptic clues and I think two of my friends guessed but that was it.
