Insomnia

I don’t know if this is strictly a pregnancy thing or not, but if I wake up at night (usually anywhere from 1 to 3), I am awake for two solid hours. Sometimes more.

It’s a hideous problem. I end up getting tired at 7pm because I’ve been up all night, but even if I manage to fall asleep early the same thing happens.

I’m not sure there’s really anything that can be done about it, either. I’m hesitant to take sleep aids while pregnant, but I would LOVE to sleep through the night again. I seem to fall asleep fine, it’s just that I wake up (or get woken up) and then can’t fall back asleep for hours.

Any advice? Should I suck it up and take Unisom or something? Or is there anything I can do once I’m awake to fall asleep again? Last night I turned on an audiobook with a 30 minute sleep timer, which I thought might help, but I had to turn it back on THREE TIMES before I finally fell asleep. (It did alleviate the boredom though, which was nice.)

I’m seriously considering going to a sleep center to get my insomnia checked. My OB said it’s normal, but I want to ask an expert on sleep if I can do something to get more sleep. I’m worried that, even when my little baby comes out, I might still not get enough sleep. However, I would need energy to take care of my little one since I’ll also be back to work by that time.

I typically drink Celestial Seasoning’s Sleepytime Herbal Tea or Bigelow Sweet Dreams Herb Tea (trying to ignore the Papyrus on the box). I find that drinking one of those helps me on those nights I have a hard time sleeping.

I tried to used something like Tylenol PM, and while it did help, it left me super drowsy the following morning.
